Our Story

HYMNS FOR HER is the debut CD for Andréa L’Heureux, introducing her as both vocalist, songwriter and vocal arranger. Her writing and song selection reflect her interest in classical, sacred and popular music.

Andréa began playing piano at age 4 and spent her childhood singing with her family around the campfire, at church and in the family station wagon.  Her mother never had to tell her to practice her piano!  Andrea enjoyed attending mass even as a child, because of the music.  As a teenager, she found her voice while practicing alone in the large 100 year old brick Catholic Church by her home, for which she had a key because she helped lead Saturday night masses. She also enjoyed soloist opportunities, singing for many weddings and funerals. She has studied with a number of voice teachers and studied voice with the Royal Conservatory in Winnipeg.  In University, she received a scholarship to sing with Holy Trinity Anglican Church and also sang with the Manitoba Sacred Music Choir.  It is in Winnipeg where she met her husband, recording engineer and drummer Anthony Maki.  They travelled to China and used music as part of their tools for teaching English. Returning to Canada she and Anthony settled on Protection Island in Nanaimo to prepare for the birth of their first child.

In 2005 when Andréa was 8 months pregnant, veteran folk artist Rick Scott hired Anthony to set up a mobile studio in his house to record the lullaby album SNOOZE MUSIC. Andréa sent along a demo cassette tape of herself singing SLUMBER MY DARLING and was hired to do a duet of that song with Rick Scott as well as sing background harmonies. She went into labour the evening of her final recording session.

SNOOZE MUSIC was nominated for a Juno and won NAPPA Gold and Parents’ Choice Silver Awards. Andréahas sung on every Rick Scott project since 2005, including THE GREAT GAZZOON, winner of 2013 WCMA for Best Children’s Album, as well as theme songs for the International Labyrinth Conference and Nanaimo Child Development Centre Telethon, and  a fundraising jingle for the Down Syndrome Research Foundation.

Andréa teaches voice and piano and is director of the Protection Island Choir. She sings regularly at house concerts and community events including annual Concert for Sierra Leone and the PI Miners’ Memorial. She contributed songs to Protection Collection CDs I and II and was featured on Shaw TV Nanaimo Child Development Centre Telethon.

Five of the ten songs on HYMNS FOR HER introduce Andréa as a songwriter and composer. She wrote lyrics and music for a moving tribute to her mother, HYMN FOR MAMA, and composed melody for GO TO THE MOON and SURELY I HAD KNOWN YOU to lyrics written by producer Valley Hennell. She co-authored arrangements for the traditional tunes AMAZING GRACE, SIMPLE GIFTS and HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING?
